Born April 1st at the Old Town site, across Kings Bay, grand-daughter to famous Holman artist, Helen Kalvak-kalak. Married to the current community fiddler, Mark and mother to 2 children. Lived and self educated in Ulukhaktok all my life. Avid fisher of all fish, charr, arctic cod, lake trout and anything else that happens to bite my aulatiit (jigger). Love to experiment with wild game cooking. Was taught by grandmother that whatever you harvest, you eat all edible parts and use all the rest for clothing and most importantly, you share your catch with others.

Janna Vallee - Instructor for beginner knitting, advanced knitting, machine knitting and weaving www.jannamaria.com
I was born and raised in Gibsons BC where I grew up surrounded by a vibrant arts community, and practiced creating art in various media myself, including creative writing, composing music and making beaded jewelry. I began knitting in 2003 when my grandmother gave me my first beginner knitting book. In 2008, after deciding that I wanted to enter into the realm of textile art as a career I launched Vancouver Yarn, BC's yarn directory which I designed and built to provide a valuable resource to fibre artists in my community. In 2009 I entered into Capilano University's Textile Art Program in North Vancouver, BC where I acquired a strong technical foundation in knitting, weaving, dyeing and surface design, all of which have allowed me to foster my love for teaching. In September 2010 I published my first knitting pattern in Nathalie Monru's knitting book, Knit & Wrap. I am currently residing in Montreal, Quebec where I am completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Fibres Program at Concordia University and maintain a blog on my website which acts as an archive of my creative processes and projects.

Jennifer Lam - Spinning instructor
Jennifer Lam likes string. She likes making string. She likes playing with string. She likes knotting up her string and sometimes she ends up with something she keeps. Or else, she just unravels everything and starts all over again. It’s only string.

Rebecca Perry - Computer and Photography Instructor
When I earned my degree in computer networking some 20 years ago, I never imagined that one day I would be teaching adult education in the remote Arctic Community of Ulukhaktok.
I am originally from Nova Scotia but moved to Ulukhaktok in 2005 with my husband Joseph. Our children are grown up and we have two little grandsons. Although we have no relatives in the community, we feel that each community member is family. Living and working with the people in this community is wonderful experience.
My teaching career began when I started working for Aurora College in 2006, teaching Computer courses and then in 2009 I was offered the position of Community Adult Educator. Part of my job is to help students find the same confidence in the classroom that they have on the land. Teaching Adults something new is something that I find very fulfilling and rewarding.
